Donovan Johnson MD completed his undergraduate education at Eastern Illinois University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biology and was a starter on their football team. He was an all-conference defensive end and linebacker. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University located in Washington, D.C. Following medical school, Dr. Johnson completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. While in New Orleans, he served as head team-physician for two local high schools, both of which were state champions in their division. After residency, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the world-renowned and prestigious Steadman Clinic located in Vail, CO. The Steadman Clinic is one of the most sought-after sports medicine fellowships for orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Johnson specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. To note, he is one of the only specialists in the Grand Strand region who specializes in complex hip arthroscopy surgery. He also has advanced training in orthopedic trauma and fracture care and joint replacement surgery. He focuses on the prevention and treatment of orthopedic conditions affecting patients of all ages. Dr. Johnson has specific interests in treating ligament, tendon and cartilage injuries of the shoulder, hip, and knee. Dr. Johnson has additional training in treating complex disorders of the hip which includes non-surgical and surgical treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, hip preservation and extra-articular tendon injuries involving the hip.
Dating back to 2015, Dr. Johnson has been fortunate to serve as team physicians to various sports organizations, including Tulane University Athletics (NCAA FBS Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track and Field). He is currently one of the US Ski and Snowboard Teams team physician and has covered several Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) events. He also has treated multiple players from the NBA, NFL, MLB and various athletes from the high school and collegiate level. He is the current head team physician for Carolina Forest High School located in Myrtle Beach, SC.
In his time away from work, Dr. Johnson and his wife, Emily, enjoy spending time with their young daughter and their dog. He enjoys the beach, fishing, hiking, skiing, cycling, and attending various sporting events.
