As obesity rates rise, CMC Weight Loss offers help
Not everyone is a candidate for medical weight loss. Yet as obesity rates rise, an increasing number of people are finding themselves in need of that treatment.
And yes, treatment is the correct term, said Dr. Zaher Nuwayhid of CMC Weight Loss. “Obesity is a disease,” he said. “Obesity is a chronic disease, so we have to treat it as such.”
In a technical sense, obesity is determined by the body mass index, commonly known as BMI. A person’s BMI is calculated using that individual’s height and weight. The ideal candidate for medical weight loss is someone who has a BMI of 27 and another serious medical condition such as diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or hypertension. Anyone with a BMI over 30 also qualifies for this treatment.
At CMC Weight Loss, Dr. Nuwayhid helps those struggling with obesity to make long-term lifestyle changes. In some cases, that means taking medication that suppresses one’s appetite. In others, the treatment is bariatric surgery. The center also offers counseling on diets and exercise, and they encourage participation in support groups with people going through similar experiences.
But before any treatment is administered, the patient must take a critical first step.
“For anybody to beat the disease, they have to have the commitment,” Dr. Nuwayhid said. “If you are not committed, then the process will not be successful. What does that mean? It means the patient has to be willing to be part of a program that entails an exercise program, diet regimen, and of course, medical or surgical weight loss, whatever is more appropriate for them.”
Typically, those who are successful at losing weight and keeping it off have support at home from family and friends. They are also proactive in planning their meals and exercise routines.
Nuwayhid stressed that it’s critical for people to take obesity seriously and not wait to seek treatment.
“Just by being obese, they shorten their lifespan by nine to 10 years,” he said. “They need to be proactive in attacking this disease and not postpone any medical treatment. Because the more you postpone, the more your body will suffer.”
CMC Weight Loss can help you achieve your weight loss goals
Depending on your unique goals and challenges, there are many different components to weight management. Some people may be fine with the help they receive through routine healthcare and weight-loss medications, while some may opt for programs such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. For others, unique treatment options recommended or performed by a bariatric physician are extremely helpful for regaining control of their weight and health.
Dr. Zaher Nuwayhid, bariatric surgeon with CMC Weight Loss, has been successful at helping patients manage their weight through medical weight loss solutions and bariatric surgery. With a medically backed, scientific approach, he and his experienced team have the clinical knowledge of the body and mind to effectively build a wellness plan that will help you achieve your weight loss goals.
