5 Ways to Find Relief From Your Fall Allergy Symptoms
The good news is, there’s a lot you can do to manage your allergies at home. When that fails, Conway Medical Center’s primary care physicians are always ready to assist you and alleviate annoying symptoms.
1. Keep an Eye on the Pollen Count
Granted, we know you can’t stay inside all day when the pollen count is high, but you can minimize your exposure. When the pollen count is creeping upward, it may not be the right time to do some gardening, yard work, or other outdoor activities.
You can keep an eye on the pollen count through your local weather station or by going to the Weather Channel forecast
2. Keep Your Home As Allergy-free As Possible
Remember that pollen can “hitch a ride” into your home through clothing, open windows, and pets. Remember to bathe your pets regularly, and change clothes immediately after being outside. Vacuuming with a HEPA filter can help you trap allergens.
3. Use a Saline Rinse
A Neti pot or similar saline rinse can help alleviate symptoms, but there are several precautions you should take. Be sure to use sterilized water. If not, you could introduce bacteria into your nasal passages, setting the stage for an infection. We encourage you to take a closer look at these detailed instructions for using a Neti pot.
4. See If You Are a Candidate for Immunotherapy
Through immunotherapy, your body is exposed to a diluted version of the allergen. Over time, you develop antibodies that will reduce your fall allergy symptoms.
Immunotherapy can also reduce inflammation that is sometimes found in rhinitis and asthma.
One of our experienced ENTs can provide additional information for you on this process and help determine if you are a candidate.
5. Speak With One of Our Primary Care Providers About Medication
Even if you decide to take over-the-counter medicine, it’s important that your healthcare team is kept in the loop. Often, our providers can make suggestions that may be more effective.
If over-the-counter solutions aren’t working, they can recommend a prescription medication that’s right for you.
When Do Fall Allergies Start in South Carolina?
Typically, fall allergies start mid-August and continue until we have the first frost–though it’s not unusual for these allergies to last well into November. However, many people have year-round allergies and need specialized treatment from their primary care physician to get relief.
As members of your community, we’re well aware of the seasonal challenges you face every year, and we’re prepared to help you. Just schedule an appointment with one of our primary care providers and they will be happy to find a solution for you.
What Causes Fall Allergies?
Ragweed is the main culprit when it comes to fall allergies, although mold is also a common problem. Pollen from trees and weeds can also be contributors.
Can Fall Leaves Cause Allergies?
Fall leaves can stir ragweed and mold, and from there, they can ride on your clothes or pets into your home. Also, be aware that wet and moldy leaves can produce spores.
Can Allergies Cause Asthma Attacks?
While allergies do not cause asthma, allergens in the environment can make asthma worse and even trigger attacks.
We recognize that asthma is an ongoing issue, and our pulmonary medicine specialists can create a plan to help you every step of the way.
