Getting to know Dr. Simone Maybin
When asked about her life growing up, Dr. Simone Maybin says with a smile that she truly enjoyed moving around a lot. As the daughter of an Air Force officer, the family lived in five different states as well as overseas in Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. She continued that tradition after graduating from the United State Air Force Academy. She served in the Air Force in New Jersey and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter as well as a deployment to Kuwait. After serving five years, she returned to South Carolina for medical school at MUSC. With her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, she knew she would either go into sports medicine or pain management. She says it came down to a quality of life issue, because as a sports medicine physician, there is another level of availability required. “As a pain management physician, I will still see patients with musculoskeletal disorders, sports injuries, and overuse injuries, and I can target that with an approach that I believe in and use my pain training, but I do not have to be there every weekend or every game.” She says there are lots of treatment modalities available for patients to help deal with pain and get back into life, and the most important thing is to ask for help from a doctor and don’t just live in pain.
Dr. Maybin has always led a healthy and active lifestyle. She cheered, played basketball, and ran track in high school and went on to run track in college. While in college she also began another sports-related hobby, bodybuilding. While in medical school, she realized a personal goal by achieving professional bodybuilding status in the class of figure. She says it’s a long-lasting sport, in that she can take the skillsets and principles from when she was actively training and use them today for a healthier lifestyle. She also encourages others as she is a certified personal trainer and health coach. “So a lot of the things I do in my extra time have to do with helping people change their behaviors to establish this healthy lifestyle they can live 365 days a year, but not feeling overwhelmed by it. It can really fit into their lifestyle, and I can help them navigate what makes sense for them.”
Now, she is part of CMC Orthopaedics and is excited for the opportunity to see patients in Conway. She says when it comes to her patients, it’s all about the connections. “I want to be able to really impact people’s lives in a special way. I want to help them feel better and make that a positive memory for them.”
