Understanding the Stages of Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is a serious condition that affects many individuals worldwide. Understanding the different stages of colon cancer is crucial for diagnosis and treatment. At the Conway Medical Center Cancer Center, our team is dedicated to helping patients navigate through the complexities of this disease.
What is Colon Cancer?
Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that starts in the colon or rectum. It typically begins as a small noncancerous growth called a polyp. Over time, these polyps can develop into cancerous tumors.
Stages of Colon Cancer
If you are diagnosed with colon cancer, the next step is figuring out the stage of the cancer, or how advanced it is. Staging helps us design a plan that treats you in the most effective way possible. So your care team can determine the stage of the cancer, you will have diagnostic tests to find out how deeply the cancer has grown in the wall of your colon and whether the cancer has spread to other parts of your body.
There are five stages of colon cancer, starting at zero and going up to four.
Stage 0:
At this stage, cancer is in situ, meaning it is confined to the innermost lining of the colon or rectum.
Stage I:
Cancer has grown through the mucosa (inner lining) and into the submucosa (layer beneath the mucosa) of the colon or rectum.
Stage II:
Cancer has spread into the muscle layer of the colon or rectum.
Stage III:
Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes and outside the colon but has not reached distant sites in the body.
Stage IV:
Cancer has spread (metastasized) to other organs or distant sites in the body, such as the liver and lungs.
The stage of cancer helps determine the typical treatment and outlook for people with cancer at that same point. However, it’s important to remember that each person’s cancer experience is unique.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Early detection of colon cancer is key to successful treatment. Screening tests such as colonoscopies can help detect cancer in its early stages. Treatment for colon cancer is mostly determined by its stage, although other factors can also play a role. Treatment options for colon cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
