CMC launches initiative to improve patient care with nasal antiseptic
Nasal Sanitizer Antiseptic to reduce infection
Conway Medical Center has launched a new initiative to add another layer of protection for our patients with the use of Nozin Nasal Sanitizer. Nozin Nasal Sanitizer Antiseptic will be used on our ICU and Pre-Op Patients to reduce bacterial nasal carriage by 99.9% and will continue to prevent recolonization for up to 12 hours with the proper application.
Lindsay Stroud, RN, Infection Control Coordinator at CMC shares, “Nozin is not an antibiotic, rather a nasal sanitizer. I cannot wait to see the positive clinical outcomes from this innovative initiative.”
Bacteria found in the nose
The nose plays a big role in how germs are carried and introduced in the hospital environment. The nose is the primary reservoir of Staph, or MRSA. In fact, the #1 risk factor for MRSA infection is MRSA nasal colonization.
Colonization can lead to infections in the colonized person and transmission from person to person via direct or indirect contact. For example, a patient touches their nose with their bare hand, the contaminated hand then touches the opening of skin via a wound or mucosal membrane, MRSA infection sets in. In can also be transmitted between sick patients via the hands of healthcare workers and shared hospital environments such as bed rails.
How does Nozin work?
By swabbing the patients nose with Nozin, it can have significant impact on preventing S. aureus/MRSA infections for Pre-Operative patients and all ICU patients. This simple swab application is quick and painless. The healthcare provider will discuss the application, along with any health concerns before application.
