CMC Now Offers Lymphedema Therapy
Conway Medical Center is now offering lymphedema therapy at CMC Physical Therapy. Therapists Kellie Hatchell, Aaron Hardee, and Andrea D’Arienzo have completed an intensive certification program in which they were trained in complete decongestive therapy which includes a combination of manual lymph drainage, skin care, compression bandaging, and exercises to reduce lymphedema-related swelling.
Lymphedema affects 1 in 1,000 Americans with 1 in 5 being women who survive cancer treatment. Lymphedema is localized swelling of a specific body part, most commonly the arms or legs. This swelling is due to an accumulation of a protein-rich fluid known as lymph fluid. Lymphedema most commonly forms after cancer treatment, but may also be the result of surgical procedures, including mastectomies, or radiation treatment.
