Getting to Know Dr. Micheal Odle
Dr. Michael Odle grew up in the mountains of southern West Virginia. He spent a lot of time outdoors hunting and fishing. His father and grandfathers were hard-working coal miners. When it came time for him to choose a career, he said the fast-paced atmosphere and technology led him to medicine. Now, it’s something else that keeps him happy in the field. “I love listening to patients and hearing their stories. I also want to be a part of helping people and making their lives better.” He went to Marshall University for undergraduate and medical school. When it came time to choose a specialty, he was not sure which to choose, at least until he had the opportunity as a third-year medical student to be in the catheterization lab for a heart procedure. “That was it for me. I knew that was what I wanted to do.
After medical school, he joined the U.S. Army and has spent the last two decades on active duty. Most recently he served at Fort Gordon’s Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta in a variety of roles including chief of cardiology and program director of the internal medicine residency. He just retired as a colonel after 20 years. He says while he and his wife both enjoyed his career in the Army, they promised themselves several years ago that when he retired, they would move to the beach.
While the lure of beach is what brought them to Conway Medical Center, it was the interview process that sealed the deal. He says they fell in love with the people here, and it was not a difficult decision to come to work at CMC Cardiology. “It’s a very family-type atmosphere. It’s a small cardiology program, but big enough to do everything that I wanted to do. I felt like I could play a pivotal role here in making things better for the hospital and advancing the care of the patients in the surrounding community.”
He and his wife, who he met in junior high school, have been married for 25 years. They have five children. While being a cardiologist does not leave him a lot of free time, he enjoys fishing with his children and spending time on the beach with his wife. He really looks forward to meeting patients and helping them live happier, healthier lives.
