How to Make Your Child Comfortable During a Trip to the Pediatrician
Do you remember the first time you went to the pediatrician?
Well, you likely didn’t remember the first time (pediatricians typically see newborns), but it’s likely that you do remember doctor visits when you were growing up.
Were you nervous? Were you afraid you’d receive a shot? Or were you at ease?
How you approach your child’s visit with a pediatrician sets the stage for how he or she will work with physicians throughout their lives. You want to be sure that this is a positive experience for them—which can be a challenge when a little one is sick, scared or has to have an unpleasant procedure.
We’ll give you the information you need to help make your child feel comfortable when you visit your pediatrician.
What Is a Pediatrician?
A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in treating children. In general, pediatricians will treat children from birth, and some will see them throughout the teen years.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, training includes three years of specialized, intensive training after medical school.
How to Make Your Child Feel Comfortable
Give Them an Idea of What to Expect
It’s important to be as truthful as possible. If they are going to get a shot or have something done that is going to be uncomfortable, gently tell them. However, be sure to also emphasize that you’ll be with them throughout the process for as long as possible.
You may even wish to buy a toy doctor’s kit and explain that the doctor will use these tools to listen to the heart, look into the ears and even see down the throat.
Explain Why You’re Going
This is a perfect time to let your child know that the doctor is there to help them. Prepare your child by always talking about the doctor in a positive manner.
You should also explain why it’s important to go to the doctor even if they’re not feeling sick. Tell them that doctors want to be sure they are healthy and growing.
Offer Distractions While Waiting
Does your child have a favorite book? Maybe there’s a soothing video they could watch while waiting for the doctor.
Keeping your child’s thoughts occupied can help relieve them of some of the anxiety involved in seeing the pediatrician
Talk to Your Pediatrician About “Comfort Positions”
These are ways to hold your child while he or she is being examined or having a vaccination. The goal is to help keep your child calm while also keeping them from flailing their arms and legs.
This will not only help your child develop coping strategies, but it will let them know that you are there with them throughout the whole visit or procedure to support and love them.
Provide Positive Reinforcement
After the appointment, provide some reward for your child. This does not have to be anything expensive or fancy. Even time at a favorite park can be a wonderful option.
Make Sure You Have a Positive Attitude
Children will mirror what they see in you. If you’re nervous or upset with doctors, they’ll pick up on these emotional cues. Be sure that they hear you speak positively when you’re going to see your own doctor.
