CMC Announces 2020 Palmetto Gold Award Winners
Conway Medical Center is honored to announce that Cathy Gouveia, RN and Dody Martin, BSN were selected to receive the 2020 Palmetto Gold Award. The Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition program was developed in 2002 to recognize Registered Nurses in the state of South Carolina who exemplify excellence in nursing practice and commitment to the nursing profession.
Cathy Gouveia got her start in nursing 23 years ago. She joined the CMC Family in 2001, working as a valuable member of our medical unit.
“I am not sure how many nurses are nominated but it is an honor to be nominated much less receive the award. I am very excited about it,” said Cathy.
“There are so many things I love about nursing. I love being able to help people, being able to see them get better from whatever brought them into the hospital and then go home. I love being able to help teach them about a newly diagnosed illness. But my true love and passion is Hospice patients. When I first decided to go to nursing school I actually wanted to follow in my Aunt’s footsteps and become a Maternal Child Health Nurse but that changed almost immediately. When I had my first experience with a dying patient and their family I knew that is where my heart was. I don’t know if it was due to the recent loss of my own brother and grandmother or what but it became my passion and still is.”
Dody Martin joined the ranks of nursing in 2007 before becoming a valued member of the CMC family in 2018. Dody is a clinical coordinator in our Emergency Department.
“To be nominated was an honor and then to be selected was very humbling,” said Dody. “I feel like most of the work I do is behind the scenes and not exactly frontline, so to me others are more deserving, but I strive to better patient care from research, updating practices and process improvements.”
“I love that every type of nurse in every role has the opportunity to contribute and empower others. From the school nurse, office nurse, nurse practitioner, front line nurse, CNO, educator; we all have the ability to make a lasting impression in someone’s life whether it is a co-worker or a patient. That is what makes this profession so great is that we can all do what we love, each in a different way and still make a difference.”
