What Are the Advantages of Infusion Therapy?
Infusion therapy offers several benefits over traditional oral treatments. One of the most notable advantages is its ability to deliver medication directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. This direct delivery ensures a rapid and often more effective response, leading to faster recovery times for patients.
For individuals with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, where the absorption of oral medication can be compromised, infusion therapy provides an efficient alternative. It ensures that patients receive the full dosage of their prescribed medication, enhancing the therapeutic effect and potentially reducing the occurrence of symptom flare-ups.
Additionally, infusion therapy can provide more consistent and controlled medication levels in the bloodstream. This steady state can be especially beneficial for managing chronic conditions, where maintaining a consistent level of medication can contribute to better long-term management and outcomes.
The decision between oral treatment and infusion therapy will be made in consultation with your referring provider and depends on various factors, including the specific condition being treated, the patient’s overall health, and personal comfort and preference.
Types of Infusions
There are various types of infusions tailored to treat a range of conditions. You might need an infusion for several reasons, such as:
- Antibiotic pills aren’t effectively treating an infection
- Inability to take or swallow pills
- Dehydration
- Requirement for long-term antibiotics
- Need for an intravenous (IV) antibiotic to monitor for allergic reactions
- Chronic anemia, requiring periodic blood or iron transfusions
In some cases, a drug is more effective when administered through infusion. For instance, infusion therapy generally does not cause gastrointestinal inflammation, preventing issues like upset stomachs.
Infusion Drugs & Types of Infusions
IV infusion involves putting medicine, blood, or fluids directly into your bloodstream, making the treatment fast and powerful. Through an IV or catheter, you can receive:
- Antibiotics
- Biologics
- Fluids
- Hemophilia factor therapy
- Intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG)
- Pain management
Infusion therapy is a versatile and effective treatment option for various medical conditions, offering rapid and controlled delivery of medication to improve patient outcomes. If you think that infusion therapy may help you, speak with your primary care doctor to determine if this is a viable option for you.
