2009 Tanger Check Presentation
As part of Tanger Outlet Center’s national effort to battle breast cancer, the Myrtle Beach Tanger Outlet Centers recently donated $91,966.00 to Conway Medical Center Foundation for the Mammography Initiative through the Stanley K. Tanger Breast Cancer Fund. Tanger’s 2009 donation was presented during a special luncheon on December 1, 2008 at Conway Medical Center.
“We are proud to have joined with our retail partners to not only raise funds, but to also create awareness for early detection, mammograms and self examination,” remarked Robert Leisen, General Manager of the Tanger Outlet Centers in Myrtle Beach. “Our goal is to continue providing hope and encouragement to breast cancer patients and their families in our area, and to keep working hard until a prevention and cure can finally be found,” added Leisen.
The Foundation participates in two local events sponsored by Tanger to raise funds and support for the Mammography Initiative - The Tanger Outlet 5K Race in August/September and the "Pink & Choose" shoppers discount card in October.
The 2nd Annual Tanger Outlet 5K Fit for Families Run/Walk will be held at the Hwy 501 location on August 28th and the Highway 17N location on September 11. Both races begin at 8:00 am and benefit the Mammography Initiative.

Tanger’s 2009 "Pink & Choose" event took place September 20 – October 19, 2009 and raised money through an onsite program at Tanger shopping centers. For a $1 donation, Tanger shoppers received a special Pink Card that gave them bonus discount savings at participating Tanger stores. A silent auction, “Ladies Rock”, was also held for rocking chairs designed and painted by local artists, businesses and art students from the Horry County Schools Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology.
The CMC Mammography Initiative was developed to assist women, who are unable to pay for the services, by financially aiding in screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and clinical breast examinations. These services are offered to all persons regardless of age, race or ethnicity that do not qualify for The Best Chance Network.* To provide services to as many women as possible, Conway Medical Center has agreed to deeply discount the screening and examination services.
“We began providing services in September 2005 and to date, we have provided assistance to approximately 1,000 women in Horry County. With the decline in our economy, we have seen an increase in demand for these services and feel fortunate to have the continued and increasing support of companies, such as Tanger Outlet Centers, and our local community”, said Berns Massey, CMC Foundation Executive Director.
With the incidence of breast cancer increasing and many younger women being diagnosed with the disorder, Conway Medical Center Foundation provides funding for mammograms and related screenings to women with no means to pay for these services who do not qualify for other assistance. Referrals for these services come from area physicians, the Friendship free medical clinic, and HEALTHREACH, Conway Medical Center’s community outreach program.
Support for the program has come from community corporate citizens, from the public, and from our employees.
